Cowboy Horse Tack (CHT) specializes in the timeless tradition of Rawhide Braiding
and Horsehair Hitching to make the finest western tack available. It is this legacy and
way of working that makes each piece of tack so special. The value of time and work
invested proves itself over and over again. Orders placed with CHT, except in rare
occasions, are all custom orders. Each ordered item is handmade especially for the
client and requires from four to six weeks to produce. For example, a Bosal takes one
braider up to three weeks to make.
Working with rawhide or animal hair is among the oldest handcrafts of mankind.
Processing and utilizing these materials predates recorded history, when they were
already valuable trading commodities. The handcraft is difficult and time consuming.
Maintaining a level of superior quality workmanship at the same time requires
patience and skill throughout the project. Needless to say, “Why can’t I get it
yesterday?” is the most frequently quoted client request and at the source of much
good humor among the braider's.
The tanning process takes time and great effort in preserving the hides to avoid
weakness and breakdown of the hide. The hairs are put through a process called
“liming” in which the hide is soaked in an alkaline lime solution. This loosens the hair
and fibers and destroys epidermis to prepare for the final cleansing of the hair. **If you
are sending in your horsehair to be used in a project please call first so we may
inquire on the condition of the hair. This will help us in determining how much can be
used and what we might be able to produce with it.
The end result of this time consuming process is top quality products that yield
beautiful handwork. The lasting effects of tack that will withstand the rigors and trials
that it is meant to go through. Whether you are breaking in a horse, training a horse,
pleasure riding, or for show; CHT will provide you with the proper tack to help you in
your goals.
